White Night at St Paul St Gallery Three
In this, the second exhibition
of Print Season 2011, artists explore the notion of cover
art. Each artist has approached the idea of cover art both in the
musical sense of a cover version of a song, creating a homage to
and reinterpretation of the original, and through an engagement
with the history of cover art in design and advertising, including
book covers, record sleeves and newspaper headlines. On White Night
the artists and invited guests are at the gallery, giving
personalised tours of the exhibition.
Matt Coldicutt has attempted to archive every New Zealand
Herald storefront headline of 2010 in his project Burnt
Ontology; Sam Ovens continually blurs his print and music
worlds through his interpretation of the language of classic punk
record sleeves and posters; and Rebecca Steedman works from classic
science and technology book covers of the 20th century,
utilising their design language in her paintings. Combined, their
works reflect on the visual and social impact of print and media in
our life.
