White Night at John Leech Gallery
Curated by John Gow and Georgina Barr, Pākehā is Liam
Barr's first exhibition with John Leech Gallery.
Barr's narrative paintings portray early colonial New Zealand,
encapsulating the attitudes of the time and highlighting the
tension of relationships between different social groups and
between New Zealand's social and natural environments. Through his
paintings Barr acknowledges cultural displacement in all its forms
and provides a refreshing view of the New Zealand experience.
Liam Barr was born in Scotland in 1966 and emigrated to New
Zealand with his family in 1974. He grew up in Banks Peninsula
before travelling and then settling in Western Australia. In 2004
he returned to New Zealand with his family. He currently lives in
Wellington with his wife and daughter and paints full time.
