Indigenous myths and legends from Cuba, Mexico and New Zealand
are retold in Pūrākau. For this international poster
project, Xavier Meade (NZ) and Flor de Lis López Hernández (Cuba)
invited 12 artists from Cuba, Mexico and New Zealand to produce
posters in response to the theme of pūrākau, a Māori term meaning
stories, myths and legends, or 'lessons for life.' The works
in this exhibition take their cues from each culture's pūrākau, in
a graphic medium that recalls the Cuban revolutionary poster
tradition.
On during White Night, 12 March, midday to
midnight. Join the carnival activities, art projects and Steve Abel
and the Chrysalids performing free! concert 8:00pm - 9:00pm
The communication of stories from one generation to the next is
an essential part of all cultures. For post-colonial
countries in particular such stories are deeply political,
recalling memories of resistance, past and present.
Reflections on history and identity are offset by the sheer visual
impact and immediacy of the posters - some of which were produced
at the same Cuban printery that once produced well known images of
Che Guevara. Each of the stories or popular legends is also
presented in text form alongside the appropriate poster, translated
into English, Spanish and Te Reo Māori.
In association with Clouds publishing, the catalogue for this
extraordinary project will also be launched at the exhibition
opening on 5 March.
