Can the blooms of Auckland's suburbs help sow seeds in fallow
ground in the inner city?
Recalling the floral artistry of festivals of the 1960s and 70s,
for the Suburban Floral Association's Shopfront people and
plants are brought together through an abundance of flowering
events. A collaboration between Auckland-based artists Monique
Redmond and Tanya Eccleston, the Suburban Floral Association
introduces its brightest blooms to a recession-hit inner city
Auckland retail environment.
White Night, 12 March, 6:00pm -
midnight
Inhabiting a vacant shop space for 12 days, Shopfront
is an alternative gardening project that regularly changes in
function - sometimes a cinema, at other times a gallery, a seminar
space, a front yard and a studio. It will change the relationships
between flowers and people, making space for conversation as well
as display.
Public art programme Letting Space was initiated in
1994 and revived in Wellington in 2010 in response to the economic
recession. It brings contemporary art out of the gallery,
commissioning leading contemporary artists to perform and install
new work in vacant commercial properties, transforming
relationships between artists, private property and the often
monocultural spaces of the city. Curated by Mark Amery and Sophie
Jerram Letting Space works to see stronger engagement
between artists, property developers and their city.
