Incompatible Elements
Josephine Starrs & Leon Cmielewski, Australia. Presented by MIC Toi Rerehiko
Incompatible Elements is an immersive experience, using
video projection, soundscape and photographic imagery, to explore
the complexities of the relationship humans have with the
natural environment and their interaction with it.
Josephine Starrs and Leon Cmielewski's video and new media works
have been shown extensively in Australia and internationally.
Previous installations have explored issues of migration,
territorial boundaries, conflict commodities and human
displacement.
On late at White Night, 12 March, 6:00pm -
midnight
For Incompatible Elements Starrs and Cmielewski have
used pixel manipulation to embed poetic texts into animated
satellite images of landscapes at particular risk from global
warming. The failure of nations in 2009 to reach an agreement
at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen has highlighted the
huge gap between the scientific consensus, and political and public
perceptions of the issues. Responding to climate change in ways
that are mythical, biblical and chemical, Incompatible
Elements questions the urban perception that humans exist
apart from, or outside of the natural environment.
Please note: Incompatible Elements finishes earlier
than originally publicised. Exhibition now runs Sat 5
March - Fri 25 March.
